Paulin's Legislation Calling for Safer Summer Camps Passes Assembly
With the school year ending and the first day of summer camp drawing near, Assemblywoman Amy Paulin is pleased to announce that her legislation calling for indoor camps to be held to the same safety requirements as other summer camps has passed the Assembly.
Currently, summer camps which conduct more than half of their activities indoors are excluded from the regulations by which other camps must abide. Consequently, camps have sought to avoid regulation by structuring their programming so that more than half of their activities are conducted indoors, regardless of the kinds of activities. As a result, activities which present a significant risk of injury are often not held to safety and sanitary standards simply because they are performed indoors, presenting a danger to our children.
“The potential life, health and safety hazards presented by camp activities are the same regardless of whether the activities are conducted indoors or not,” said Assemblywoman Paulin. “Right now, parents across the state are beginning to send their children off to camp, and it is imperative that we do all we can to ensure these children’s safety.”
Suzi Oppenheimer is sponsoring the bill in the Senate, where Paulin hopes the power struggle is resolved as quickly as possible so that they can vote on this important bill.
