Assemblywoman Paulin Works With Students to Bring Trash Compactors to Tuckahoe Train Stations

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin is pleased to announce the installation of new, solar powered trash bins at the Tuckahoe and Crestwood train stations.

These high technology receptacles, called “Big Bellies,” use solar energy to compact the trash inside them, allowing them to hold five times as much trash as conventional garbage bins despite being roughly the same size. As a result, the bins require fewer collection trips, minimize garbage overflow and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Large numbers of people pass through the Tuckahoe train stations every day on the way to work, and they usually have newspapers, coffee cups or other garbage with them,” said Paulin. “The new bins will help ensure that this garbage is properly thrown out instead of thrown on the ground.”

Paulin secured funding for the new trash compactors after she was approached by a group of six students from Tuckahoe Middle School, Eastchester Middle School and Immaculate Conception. The students were winners of Tuckahoe Mayor John Fitzpatrick’s “Mayor for a Day” contest. “The intention of the ‘Mayor for a Day’ program was to illustrate to our youth that government is not just about adults,” said Mayor Fitzpatrick. “These students showed they had great ideas for Tuckahoe and the determination to see them through to completion.”

Paulin echoed the Mayor’s sentiment, stating, “I have received great suggestions from constituents in the past, but this case is very special and I think we should all be proud to see our youth so devoted to improving our community.”
