ABOUT AMY

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin is now serving her fifth term as representative of the 88th New York State Assembly District, having been first elected in November, 2000.

A full time legislator, Amy is a strong advocate for the people of the 88th district, which includes Scarsdale, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Bronxville, Pelham, Pelham Manor, and parts of New Rochelle and White Plains.

Amy Paulin has been fighting hard to reform Albany. In recognition of her commitment, NY Uprising has named Assemblywoman Paulin a "Hero of Reform." Assemblywoman Paulin has sponsored a bill to completely overhaul the broken and unfair system for awarding member-items to legislators. In these tough economic times, she has refused to seek or accept any member-items, and publicly called for her colleagues to do the same. She has also sponsored legislation to ban fundraisers in Albany during the legislative session, reduce the influence of special interests on elections, and end the "Pay-To-Play" culture in Albany.

She is one of the Legislature's most active members, sponsoring 20 bills that were passed in both houses during the past year. She ranks in the top 3% of legislators for passing bills.

The former Director of My Sisters' Place, a non-profit agency which assists victims of domestic violence, Amy Paulin has long been an advocate for the needs of women and children. Named a Leader in the Fight against Domestic Violence by the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NYSCADV), Assemblywoman Paulin authored landmark legislation, signed into law, that lengthens orders of protection in both the civil and criminal courts to assist those victimized by domestic violence. She also negotiated the law making human trafficking a class B felony.

Amy believes one of her most important legislative accomplishments this year was writing and sponsoring the comprehensive reform package that provides temporary maintenance and counsel fees to the less-monied spouse during a divorce proceeding.  Without reform, victims of domestic violence as well as moderate and low-income spouses bear a disproportionate share of the economic consequences of divorce.

Assemblywoman Paulin currently chairs the Assembly's committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and serves on Children and Families, Education, Health and Higher Education.

Amy Paulin was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany and holds a Master's degree and has completed doctoral course work in Criminal Justice from SUNY-Albany. Assemblywoman Paulin resides in Scarsdale with her husband, Ira Schuman. They have three children.
